COS logo  FAQ’s: Gas Bill Increase Caused By Winter Storm Uri

The below information is being provided to all of our customers regarding their latest gas bills that were affected by the February 2021 winter storm.

  • How did my gas bill get so high?
    • Due to the unprecedented cold extremity of the winter storm in February, we saw a higher consumption of natural gas statewide.  This demand caused a significant increase in gas prices.
  • Who provides gas to our City of Sealy?
  • What is the process for obtaining a gas contract?
    • 60 days prior to the end of the current gas contract, the City contacts various gas providers to request pricing for contracts to serve the City’s gas needs. (RP’s: requests for pricing.)  After City staff reviews pricing, it brought before Council for approval.
  • Do I have to pay my bill?
    • Yes, we are requesting payment as scheduled.  We have created a payment plan for those who cannot pay in full.
  • Why can’t the City of Sealy absorb the cost?
    • The City of Sealy is a public entity and not a for-profit business.  Therefore, our resources are substantially limited.
  • What is the City of Sealy doing to help its citizens pay for this bill?
    • On March 16, 2021, the Mayor and Council signed and submitted a statement requesting assistance from Senator Kolkhorst and State Representative Ben Leman to investigate and provide assistance with the exorbitant gas prices.  Both City staff and Council are working fervently to find a resolution to assist its citizens with their gas bills.
  • Are other cities affected in the same way as the City of Sealy?
    • Yes.  Other local cities and municipalities are in the same situation as the City of Sealy.  Staff has communicated with other cities that are experiencing a similar situation with increased gas pricing.
  • Will my gas be cut off if I do not pay?
    • Yes, however, we encourage those who cannot pay in full to set up a payment plan to ensure they do not lose City services.
  • What are my payment options?
    • You can pay in full and those who cannot, we have established a 12-month plan.  Please click HERE to view payment schedule options.
  • Is there anything I can do to help with this gas issue?
    • While the City of Sealy is actively working on resolving this issue, our customers can help us by contacting Senator Kolkhorst’s and State Representative Ben Leman’s offices.  The City of Sealy has created a letter template that citizens can mail to the two government officials.  This grassroots movement of contacting public officials has proven to be an effective method to speed up the legislative process.  You can download the letter HERE.
    • Below is a comprehensive website link list for state legislators and agencies residents can contact to assist the City with the gas increase crisis.
