Boards & Commissions

Become a Board/Committee Member
The most effective way for citizens to become involved directly in governmental programs is to serve on a citizen board or commission. Citizen boards are not legislative boards; the extent of their authority is contingent upon city ordinances and/or state statutes. The members of each board or committee are tasked with making recommendations to the City Council, who relies on their opinions and expertise specific to each respective board's duties and responsibilities.

Member Eligibility
Application qualifications include the following:
  • Must be a qualified resident of the City of Sealy for at least one (1) year prior to the date of appointment
  • Must be a qualified voter in the City of Sealy
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • May not apply to serve on the same board with any immediate family members
  • Regular full-time City employees are not eligible unless required by federal, state, or local laws or regulations
  • Immediate family members of City employees may not apply to serve on City boards
Note: TIRZ #2 Board may not be subject to residence requirements by all members

For additional requirements for individual boards/commissions please visit the corresponding page for the board/commission under the "Boards & Commissions" section below.
All qualified persons, applying for the first time, must complete an "Application for Appointment to City of Sealy Boards and Commissions" form and submit to the City Secretary by May 1st. Current members who wish to be reappointed to their current board/commission must submit a "Request for Re-Appointment to City of Sealy Boards and Commissions" form to the City Secretary by the first Friday in May. If a current member would like to be considered for appointment to a different board, they will need to submit the "Application for Appointment" form for the board or commission for which they would like to be considered. Persons may apply for consideration for more than one board.

Vacancies
Occasionally, a board member may be unable to finish their term or will be removed by the Council prior to the end of their term. In the event a vacancy occurs prior to the expiration of a full term, the Council may appoint a new member to complete the unexpired term of the vacant position.
Instead of soliciting applicants for the vacancy, the Mayor may refer to the previously submitted applications kept by the City Secretary's office. If there are no appropriate open applications for the vacant position(s), a new application solicitation campaign may take place in the same manner as the typical annual recruitment process.

Boards Appointment Applications
Advertising of scheduled board vacancies for terms expiring May 31st will begin in March of each year.
With the exception of the Charter Review Commission, applications submitted will be reviewed by the Mayor who will make recommendations of appointment to Council for approval. Appointment will require a majority confirmation vote of approval by City Council.
If you are interested in becoming a board member, complete the appropriate application below for submission to the City Secretary.
