H-GAC, in partnership with Austin County and the participating jurisdictions of the City of Bellville, City of Brazos Country, City of Industry, City of San Felipe, City of Sealy, City of South Frydek, City of Wallis, Bellville ISD, Sealy ISD, and Brazos ISD will be hosting a public hearing regarding the draft Austin County Hazard Mitigation Plan, 2024 Update on April 2nd, 2024, at 6:00 PM.The Public Hearing will be held at the City Council Chambers at 415 Main Street, Sealy, Texas 77474.
The purpose of the public hearing is to receive comments from all interested individuals regarding the Draft Austin County Hazard Mitigation Plan Update before considering final adoption by City Council.
The goal of the Hazard Mitigation Plan is to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to life and property from natural hazard events by identifying and implementing cost-effective mitigation actions. Mitigation is defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as sustained actions taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards and their effects. A Hazard Mitigation Committee comprised of representatives from all participating jurisdictions was convened to assess the risks and vulnerabilities to natural hazards that are prevalent to the Austin County area and the region, and to make recommendations on mitigating the effects of such hazards.
The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, as amended, requires that local governments, develop, adopt, and update natural hazard mitigation plans every 5 years to remain eligible for federal assistance and funding. The previous Austin County Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted in 2018.
